Wood or Concrete?

The exterior walls of the Potawot Health Village are tilt-up concrete. Beautiful aren't they? Form liners and stain on the tilt-up panels create the look of redwood planks. Lund & Everton proposed this system for structural support and building enclosures to respond to the needs for a low-maintenance exterior that reminisced of native long houses.

How did they do that?

A thin concrete slab creates the canopy over a walkway leading to the Whatcom Community College Art Facility. What you can't see is concrete walls within the brick colonnade that cantilever from the ground and support the two-way cantilever slab.

Autoclaved aerated concrete; great insulating values but can they be used structurally?

These structural walls of autoclaved aerated block construction support an open-web joist and tectum panel roof. The exceptional insulating value of AAC block is ten times that of conventional concrete. The walls shown are used for the Discovery House of the San Antonio Zoo Early Childhood Development. Lightweight units make for quick installation and shaping performed with normal woodworking tools on site. L&E added minimal reinforcing for wind resistance.
